If you buy cheap, you buy twice. For our travels, we initially had an inexpensive stroller from Amazon – a Lionelo. But after just a few uses, the brake was defective, and the harness could never be tightened properly or kept loosening on its own. Instead of buying another “disposable stroller,” we deliberately chose a branded buggy this time: the Bugaboo Butterfly in the new, significantly improved Version 2.
Advantages of the Butterfly 2
Recline Position
A major plus of the new version – and rather rare among travel strollers – is the true recline position.

For newborns, the baby nest accessory is recommended. However, we have also let our baby sleep in the stroller without the baby nest (of course only under supervision).
Due to stricter safety regulations, the US version does not support a completely flat recline position.
The footrest can now be conveniently adjusted with just one hand.
Sun Canopy
A clear advantage over many inexpensive travel strollers: the sun canopy can be almost completely closed.

On the back, there is a lever that allows you to adjust the canopy particularly comfortably:

A small viewing window at the top of the canopy has also been added:

Brake
The new brake mechanism is significantly more robust and no longer disengages unintentionally – even on smooth floors.
On our old travel stroller, the brake was positioned at axle height and was constantly activated accidentally while walking:

On the Butterfly 2, the brake is positioned higher and centrally:

Suspension and Stability
The slightly larger wheels and good suspension ensure high ride comfort. Uneven surfaces are noticeably better cushioned – especially on cobblestones.
Overall, the stroller feels very stable, even in corners, and hardly tips.
Material
The padding has been improved, and the material feels higher quality overall. The seat is more thickly padded, making it noticeably more comfortable for children.

Safety Harness
The five-point harness can now be easily adjusted and holds reliably – no more constant readjusting like with our old budget stroller.

Storage Space
The storage space under the stroller is absolutely sufficient for a travel buggy. In addition, there is a small pocket on the seat:

We also like to use the area at the top behind the seat:

However, this area cannot be used when the seat is in the reclined position.
Folding
The folding mechanism truly works with just one hand – ideal when you’re holding your child:

The Butterfly 2 is not quite as compact as some ultra-light travel buggies – but those often come with other compromises (no true recline position or a smaller sun canopy).
For air travel, we use an IKEA DIMPA bag, in which the stroller including accessories fits easily:

Accessories
Rain Cover
There is a new rain cover for the Butterfly 2 that fits very well and extends far down at the back when the child is lying down:

Winter Footmuff
The Bugaboo winter footmuff fits perfectly on the Butterfly 2 as well:

Infant Car Seat
We also use the Butterfly 2 with the Maxi-Cosi Pebble 360 Pro² infant car seat, as it can be adjusted to an almost flat position.
The infant car seat is attached to the stroller using special adapters.

In the car, the infant car seat can either be secured with the seat belt or with a compatible base station.
Unfortunately, when using the infant car seat, you cannot use just the stroller frame. However, this is manageable, as the sun canopy can still be used to protect the baby from the sun all around.
When the infant car seat is mounted, an older child cannot ride along. If you regularly need to transport two children, you should opt for a standard stroller instead.
Conclusion
Bugaboo has thoughtfully revised many details in the Butterfly 2 – and you can feel it in everyday use. The Bugaboo Butterfly 2 is a true travel buggy without major compromises: lightweight, well-designed, and stable.

After several weeks of use, we wouldn’t want to go back to cheaper models. Everything feels high-quality, nothing rattles – and most importantly: the harness stays where it should, and the brake doesn’t let us down.
What we liked less:
- Handle height not adjustable: For very tall parents, pushing it over time could become slightly uncomfortable – though this is common with travel buggies.
- Weight and folded size: not an absolute lightweight
- Price: At around €450–500, not a bargain, but the quality justifies the price.
- Accessories sold separately: safety bar, rain cover, and cup holder must be purchased separately.
Yes, the price is high. But if you travel often or use the buggy regularly, you’ll quickly appreciate the quality and everyday practicality. For us, it’s clear: Better to invest properly once – and travel more relaxed.
